FC Tokyo strengthened its lead in the Japanese football league after defeating its guest Kashima Antlers with a score of two goals to none in the fourteenth round, reaching 33 points and widening the gap with its competitor, which remained at 23 points in sixth place.
The importance of the victory was not only in securing the three points but also in continuing the team’s exceptional streak that made it the talk of the Japanese sports press; it achieved its third consecutive win and extended its unbeaten record to 13 consecutive matches, while also keeping a clean sheet for the ninth consecutive game, equaling the historical league record set by Nagoya Grampus in 2021.
The decisive moment came after a difficult first half, during which Kashima imposed periods of control, but the home team managed to absorb the pressure before Mikki Nagakora opened the scoring in the 60th minute, benefiting from a header assist by Kota Tawaradita, following a cross from Soma Anzai.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Dani Gomez ended Kashima’s hopes with a second goal from a quick counterattack, but he was sent off immediately after celebrating by taking off his shirt, having received a second yellow card.
The Japanese site “Soccer Digest” described Tokyo’s strength as “real,” noting that the team showed the character of a title contender after enduring pressure during difficult periods and then capitalizing on its chances to secure the match. The site also observed widespread fan engagement on social media, with praise for the solidity of the defense and questions about the significant transformation in the team’s level.
On the other hand, Kashima’s coach, Tatsu Oniki, expressed his disappointment, stating that his players fought throughout the match and deserved at least a point, but he took responsibility for not achieving the desired result.
In other results, Yokohama Marinos drew with Fagiano Okayama, and Avispa Fukuoka drew with V-Varen Nagasaki with a score of 1-1, while Tokyo Verdy won against Shimizu S-Pulse 1-0, and Kyoto Sanga defeated Nagoya Grampus 2-0.
