He only needed a few dollars to buy a soda, but his inability to pay for it led him to discover a fortune that had been hidden in his wallet for nearly two months.. Thus, a fleeting moment in an American store turned into a surprise that changed Michael Vander Lugt’s day, after he discovered that he was carrying a winning lottery ticket worth a million dollars.
According to UPI, Vander Lugt, 54, who resides in Wyoming, Michigan, purchased a ticket to participate in the Powerball drawing held on August 8, from a Big Top store, before placing it in his wallet with several other tickets, without checking the result.
Weeks later, the coincidence that revealed the surprise began when the man stopped at a store to buy a soda, only to discover at the checkout that the amount he had was not enough to cover the cost.
Instead of resorting to his bank card, he decided to use the old lottery tickets in his wallet, thinking that one of them might have a small prize to help him cover the missing amount.
However, checking the tickets brought him an unexpected surprise, as it turned out that one of them was a winner of a prize of one million dollars, according to the Michigan Lottery.
Thus, the ticket that had been trapped in his wallet for two months was not just a piece of paper he had forgotten among his belongings, but it held a huge prize he was unaware of, and its discovery would not have happened if it weren’t for the lack of a few dollars when buying a soda.
