كيف نعرف أن قصة الجريمة جيدة وتستحق عناء القراءة؟
الإجابة ببساطة: حين يبرع الكاتب في إخفاء الجثة!
لكن ما حدث مع «أميدي» ــ بطل مسرحية الكاتب الفرنسي أوجين يونسكو ــ كان أمراً خارجاً عن المألوف؛ إذ كانت الجثة تتضخم يوماً بعد يوم في إحدى غرف شقته الضيقة، حتى زاحمت الأثاث وكادت تملأ المنزل. إنها مسرحية عبثية بامتياز، تجسّد تضخم مشكلاتنا، والتعفن الذي يتسلل إلى تفاصيل حياتنا، وعلاقاتنا، وبيوتنا. وعندما قرر أميدي أخيراً أن يغرق الجثة في النهر، طارت به في السماء كبالون هيليوم فوق المدينة، ليتخفف فجأة من كل الأثقال التي حاصرته في الماضي.
أما في رائعة إدغار آلان بو، فقد أخفى القاتل جثته بإتقان شديد تحت خشبات أرضية الغرفة، لدرجة عجز معها أمهر المحققين عن كشفها. لكن الكارثة حلّت من حيث لا يحتسب؛ إذ ظل طوال الوقت يسمع صوت نبضات قلب القتيل تصدح من تحت قدميه وهو يسير في البيت. لقد نجح في إخفاء جريمته عن العالم كله، لكنه عجز تماماً عن حجبها عن ضميره المؤرق.
وفي رواية «مئة عام من العزلة» لغابرييل غارسيا ماركيز، يقتل «خوسيه أركاديو بوينديا» جاره، لكن الجار المقتول يتحوّل إلى طيف يزوره كل ليلة في منزله، لا لينتقم، بل ليغسل الدماء عن جراحه في مشهد يقطر أسى.
بينما في أعمال الكاتب الإيطالي داريو فو، يأخذ التخلص من الجثث طابعاً كوميدياً سوداوياً؛ إذ يحدث بدافع الفقر والواقعية المريرة، بهدف تجنّب التحقيقات الرسمية والإبقاء على الراتب التقاعدي للمتوفى!
وفي الأدب العربي، تتسع المأساة لتصبح وطناً؛ ففي رواية «باب الشمس» لإلياس خوري، يضطر الناس لدفن موتاهم داخل بيوتهم تفادياً لرصاص القناصة في الخارج، ليتحوّل الوطن في زمن الحرب إلى مقبرة جماعية كبرى، يعيش فيها الجميع ــ الأحياء والأموات على حد سواء ــ حياة البرزخ.
إن الأعمال الأدبية التي تتناول موضوع «إخفاء الجثث» تذهب إلى أبعاد أعمق بكثير من مجرد قصص الجرائم والبحث الجنائي التقليدية؛ فموضوعها الحقيقي ليس البحث عن الجاني، بل البحث عن مصائرنا نحن، وعن الجثث المخبوءة في ضمائرنا.. إنها حكايات تفتش عن تلك البقايا الراقدة في أعماقنا، والتي لا تكف عن المطالبة بالعدالة الاجتماعية والإنسانية.
How do we know that a crime story is good and worth the effort of reading?
The answer is simple: when the writer excels at hiding the body!
But what happened with “Amidi” — the protagonist of the play by French writer Eugène Ionesco — was something out of the ordinary; the body was growing larger day by day in one of the cramped rooms of his apartment, until it crowded the furniture and nearly filled the house. It is an absurd play par excellence, embodying the inflation of our problems and the decay that seeps into the details of our lives, our relationships, and our homes. And when Amidi finally decided to drown the body in the river, it floated him into the sky like a helium balloon over the city, suddenly freeing him from all the burdens that had trapped him in the past.
In Edgar Allan Poe’s masterpiece, the killer expertly hid the body under the floorboards of the room, to the extent that even the most skilled detectives failed to uncover it. But disaster struck unexpectedly; he kept hearing the heartbeat of the victim echoing from beneath his feet as he walked around the house. He succeeded in hiding his crime from the entire world, but he was completely unable to shield it from his tormented conscience.
In Gabriel García Márquez’s novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” “José Arcadio Buendía” kills his neighbor, but the murdered neighbor transforms into a ghost who visits him every night in his home, not to take revenge, but to wash the blood from his wounds in a scene dripping with sorrow.
Meanwhile, in the works of Italian writer Dario Fo, disposing of bodies takes on a darkly comedic tone; it happens out of poverty and bitter realism, aiming to avoid official investigations and to keep the deceased’s pension intact!
In Arabic literature, tragedy expands to become a homeland; in the novel “Gate of the Sun” by Elias Khoury, people are forced to bury their dead inside their homes to avoid the sniper’s bullets outside, turning the homeland in wartime into a vast mass grave, where everyone — the living and the dead alike — lives a purgatorial existence.
The literary works that address the theme of “hiding bodies” delve into much deeper dimensions than mere crime stories and traditional criminal investigations; their true subject is not the search for the perpetrator, but the search for our own destinies, and for the bodies hidden in our consciences… They are tales that seek out those remnants lying deep within us, which incessantly demand social and human justice.
