American warships deployed in the Middle East are preparing for the possibility of a new military escalation against Iran, amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s hinting at launching an operation similar to “Epic Fury” if Tehran fails to reach an agreement with Washington, despite U.S. officials confirming that no final decision has been made regarding any new attacks.
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. officials familiar with military planning said that naval forces are preparing for the possibility of a presidential decision to launch a new round of attacks in the coming weeks.
A team from the newspaper observed, during a rare visit to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington and a guided-missile destroyer in the Arabian Sea, air operations and resupply missions, which included long-range missiles to strike ground targets beyond the range of defenses, and bunker-busting bombs targeting fortified sites.
Captain Nicholas DeLeo, the commander of the aircraft carrier, stated: “We are always ready,” emphasizing the monitoring of developments and readiness to respond or take preemptive action. The U.S. Department of Defense clarified that the military’s mission is to prepare military options and present them to the president, while Trump had previously stated that he would not launch attacks before the upcoming midterm elections in November.
In a parallel escalation, a U.S. intelligence memo revealed an increase in Iran’s efforts to target American diplomats and officials in the Middle East and beyond.
During a campaign rally in Florida, Trump hinted at a new military operation if Tehran does not reach an agreement, stating that the United States destroyed Iranian nuclear capabilities during the “Midnight Hammer” and “Epic Fury” operations, adding: “We may carry out an operation similar to Epic Fury, or they will agree to a deal.”
Trump stated that Washington can end the war quickly, questioning whether it is better to resolve the conflict or let it gradually subside, and he spoke about the possibility of seizing Iranian oil and transporting it through the Strait of Hormuz.
