The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Mohammed Al-Budaiwi, affirmed that the relations between the Council’s member states and the United Kingdom are based on a long history of cooperation, trust, and shared interests, which has contributed to building a distinctive economic and trade partnership between the two sides.
This came during his speech at the economic forum between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the United Kingdom, which was held today in the British capital, London, in the presence of a number of ministers, officials, business leaders, and investors from both sides.
He explained that the economic partnership combines the ambitious developmental visions of the Council’s member states with the United Kingdom’s expertise in vital sectors, emphasizing the importance of enhancing cooperation in light of global economic transformations, geopolitical developments, and challenges in trade, investment, and supply chains.
He pointed out that the Council’s member states continue their efforts to achieve economic integration, diversify production bases, improve business environments, and empower the private sector, noting that the GDP of the Council’s member states reached approximately 2.4 trillion US dollars, making it among the top ten economies globally, while their foreign trade exceeded 1.8 trillion dollars, ranking fifth worldwide. He also reviewed the progress in developing smart cities and sustainable urban development, employing artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, and enhancing cybersecurity and the digital economy, all of which support economic growth and global competitiveness.
He indicated that the volume of trade exchange between the Council’s member states and the United Kingdom reached approximately 70 billion US dollars in 2025, making the Council’s member states collectively the tenth largest trading partner of the United Kingdom, while the total value of mutual investment assets and liabilities between the two sides reached about 643 billion dollars in 2024, reflecting the depth of economic and investment relations between them.
He confirmed that concluding negotiations on the free trade agreement represents a strategic step to expand trade, encourage investment, and create new opportunities for the private sector, noting that the agreement is the result of joint efforts and intensive negotiations, expressing his appreciation for the negotiating teams and institutions that contributed to its achievement.
He clarified that the agreement includes the elimination of customs duties on more than 99% of the Council’s member states’ exports to the United Kingdom, which supports the growth of non-oil exports, particularly in the aluminum, fertilizers, and manufacturing sectors, enhances opportunities for logistics and re-export services, and enables small and medium-sized enterprises to expand their businesses and access the British market.
He added that the benefits of the agreement extend beyond trade to enhance long-term economic and investment partnerships, especially in advanced manufacturing sectors, the digital economy and artificial intelligence, clean energy, financial services, education, food security, and logistics services, all of which support joint investment, technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and enhancing productive capacities.
