A Chinese woman sparked widespread controversy after acquiring 196 parking spaces in a residential complex in Changsha, before selling some at high prices and renting others at double the original price, prompting residents to turn to the courts in protest against what they considered an “unprecedented monopoly.”
The story dates back to 2018 when the real estate project was struggling with low demand, so the woman (Wu) decided to invest in it after reviewing local development plans, purchasing the parking spaces for about 14 million yuan (approximately 2 million dollars), thereby acquiring nearly 40% of the total parking spaces in the complex.
As the area developed and demand for parking spaces increased, Wu began renting some for $75 a month; that is, double the price set by the developer. She also offered spaces for sale at around $15,000 each, which angered residents who felt the prices were “excessive” and that she was exploiting the residents’ needs.
However, the court ruled in favor of Wu, confirming that all residents had previously been given the opportunity to purchase the parking spaces but did not take advantage of it, and that her actions did not violate local laws regarding ownership and investment.
