Four Canadian soldiers were killed and 39 others were injured, including 19 in critical condition, due to a rapidly spreading fire that swept through a live-fire training area at the Wainwright military base in Alberta, amid exceptional weather conditions that contributed to the sudden spread of the flames, according to Canadian authorities.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst tragedies faced by the Canadian Armed Forces on home soil during peacetime, announcing that flags would be lowered to half-mast on federal buildings across the country in mourning for the victims.

Carney confirmed that the families of the fallen soldiers had been informed of the incident, noting that the injured belonged to both regular and reserve forces and came from various military bases across Canada.

The fire engulfed the training site in 36 seconds

Major General Wade Rutland, commander of the Canadian First Division, stated that military officials were aware of the fire outbreak hours before the disaster, but believed that the flames were under control, allowing training to continue, until a sudden change in wind direction pushed the flames toward the soldiers.

Rutland explained during a press conference in Edmonton that the fire was one kilometer away when the wind direction changed, adding that the flames covered that distance in 36 seconds, a speed he described as unusual.

He noted that one of the leaders present at the incident site informed him that the soldiers went from seeing a fire-free area to facing flames surrounding them in less than a minute.

The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon within a military training area, coinciding with intense combat training conducted by Charlie Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

About 84 soldiers were spread across a grenade training field and another area simulating an attack on enemy positions before the flames extended to the combat training area.

Investigators have not yet been able to determine the cause of the grass igniting within the training area.

Identification of the fallen soldiers

The Canadian Armed Forces announced the identities of the four soldiers who were killed: Sergeant Morgan Wong from Edmonton, Private Sean Farrell from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Private Aidan Golding from North Vancouver, and Private Hayden Leikmark from Langley, British Columbia.

The four soldiers were serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton.

Rutland explained that the battalion was preparing for rapid deployment in response to international crises, as well as participating in a mission to reinforce Canadian forces in Latvia next spring.

19 injured in critical condition and widespread medical mobilization

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated that 39 people were receiving medical care following the incident, while Saya Zilke, CEO of Acute Care Alberta, clarified that 19 of the injured were in critical condition, eight were stable, and 12 others were receiving treatment for less severe injuries.

Smith added that some of the injured suffered severe burns that may require weeks or months of intensive and specialized treatment.

The injured were transported from the Wainwright area to four major hospitals: the University of Alberta Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, and the Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Authorities utilized 22 ground ambulances, six planes, and two helicopters to transport the injured, with assistance from teams from the neighboring province of Saskatchewan.

Health authorities announced the lifting of the emergency status known as “Code Orange,” which had been activated in several hospitals to mobilize medical staff and provide necessary beds for mass casualties.

Smith confirmed that all known injured individuals had been accounted for, and there were no additional cases awaiting transport.

Rescue teams face the aftermath of the fire

Wainwright Mayor Bruce Bow said that the small local hospital was not equipped to handle an incident of this magnitude, but he praised the efforts of healthcare workers who participated in the emergency response.

Rutland confirmed that military technicians specialized in search and rescue parachuted into the area to bolster response efforts, while the mayor noted that the red parachutes were illuminated by flares as the teams descended just before midnight.

Military investigation and safety procedure review

Rutland stated that investigations would include a review of the circumstances that led to the spread of the fire, including the possibility that the change in wind direction pushed the fire toward the soldiers or that the flames spread through vegetation without being detected before suddenly surrounding them.

He added that the winds remained within normal operational limits for much of Saturday, generally blowing at less than 50 kilometers per hour before picking up speed.

He explained that training field officials rely on weather reports to determine the safety of continuing training, emphasizing that investigators would also look into whether safety protocols need to be amended.

Rutland said, “If our protocols need to change, they will be updated,” noting that the Armed Forces typically form a formal investigation committee in such incidents and that reaching final conclusions may take time.

Following the incident, the company involved in the training was withdrawn from the area, and training for the rest of the battalion was suspended on Sunday.

The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed that there were no indications that the fire was the result of a terrorist act, while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stated that their officers responded to a report of the fire shortly after 4 PM on Saturday.

Windstorm hits Alberta and disrupts early voting

The incident coincided with a strong windstorm that struck large areas of Alberta on Saturday, with gusts reaching about 100 kilometers per hour, leading to fallen trees, flying signs, and the fire spreading to rural areas outside the base.

By Saturday evening, local authorities announced that the fire was under control and that properties and critical infrastructure were secured, with no evacuation orders issued for residents.

The incident also disrupted early voting ahead of the referendum scheduled for Monday on whether Alberta should begin a process that could lead to separation from Canada.

The Alberta Election Agency announced the early voting center at the Wainwright Community Complex was closed ahead of schedule, confirming the transfer and securing of election materials.

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of the fire and assess safety procedures within the base, while efforts focus on providing necessary care for the injured and supporting the families of the victims in one of the most tragic incidents faced by the Canadian Armed Forces during peacetime.
