تمكنت فرق الإنقاذ في لاوس، بدعم دولي، من إخراج 7 قرويين كانوا محاصرين داخل كهف غمرته المياه لأكثر من 10 أيام، بعد أن دخلوا الكهف بحثاً عن معادن ثمينة، وتحديداً رواسب الذهب، قبل أن تعصف عاصفة مطيرة عنيفة بالمنطقة.
وقعت الحادثة في مقاطعة زايسومبون وسط لاوس، إذ دخل ثمانية قرويين الكهف حوالى 19-20 مايو، وبعد ساعات قليلة، هطلت أمطار غزيرة تسببت في فيضانات مفاجئة وانهيارات أرضية، مما أدى إلى إغلاق مدخل الكهف وارتفاع منسوب المياه داخل الممرات الضيقة، ونجح أحد القرويين في الخروج مبكراً وأبلغ السلطات، بينما حوصر الباقون داخل الكهف.
وبعد عملية بحث شاقة استمرت نحو 10 أيام، عثرت فرق الإنقاذ على 5 منهم أحياء، إذ تم إخراج الأول بمساعدة الغواصين، بينما تمكن الأربعة الآخرون بعده بيوم من الخروج سيراً على الأقدام والزحف بأنفسهم بعد انخفاض منسوب المياه، وذلك في لحظات درامية وثقتها كاميرات الفرق. ويستمر البحث عن شخصين آخرين مفقودين.
وشاركت في العملية فرق إنقاذ لاوسية وتايلندية، إلى جانب غواصين وخبراء من دول عدة مثل ماليزيا، فنلندا، اليابان، إندونيسيا، فرنسا وأستراليا.
وواجهت الفرق تحديات كبيرة تمثلت في الممرات الضيقة جداً أقل من 50 سم في بعض الأجزاء، والطين الكثيف، والمخاطر الجيولوجية، والأمطار المستمرة.
وأفادت التقارير أن الناجين كانوا في حالة إعياء شديد لكنهم بحالة مستقرة بعد تلقي العلاج الطبي، إذ حذرهم الأطباء من تناول الطعام ببطء بعد فترة طويلة من الجوع.
وتُعد عمليات التنقيب غير الرسمي عن المعادن خصوصاً الذهب شائعة في المناطق الجبلية النائية في لاوس، حيث يلجأ بعض القرويين إلى الكهوف والمناجم القديمة بحثاً عن مصادر دخل إضافية.
وتُشكل هذه الأنشطة مخاطر عالية بسبب عدم وجود خرائط دقيقة للكهوف، وعدم توفر معدات السلامة، إضافة إلى تأثير الأمطار الموسمية الغزيرة التي تسبب فيضانات مفاجئة وانهيارات أرضية.
Rescue teams in Laos, with international support, managed to extract 7 villagers who had been trapped inside a cave flooded for more than 10 days after they entered the cave in search of precious minerals, specifically gold deposits, before a violent rainstorm hit the area.
The incident occurred in the Xaysomboun province in central Laos, where eight villagers entered the cave around May 19-20. A few hours later, heavy rains caused flash floods and landslides, leading to the cave’s entrance being blocked and water levels rising inside the narrow passages. One villager managed to escape early and informed the authorities, while the others were trapped inside the cave.
After a grueling search operation lasting about 10 days, rescue teams found 5 of them alive. The first was brought out with the help of divers, while the other four managed to walk and crawl out themselves a day later after the water level decreased, in dramatic moments captured by the teams’ cameras. The search continues for two other missing individuals.
The operation involved rescue teams from Laos and Thailand, along with divers and experts from several countries including Malaysia, Finland, Japan, Indonesia, France, and Australia.
The teams faced significant challenges, including very narrow passages of less than 50 cm in some areas, thick mud, geological hazards, and continuous rain.
Reports indicated that the survivors were in severe exhaustion but in stable condition after receiving medical treatment, as doctors warned them to eat slowly after a long period of hunger.
Informal mining activities, especially for gold, are common in the remote mountainous areas of Laos, where some villagers resort to caves and old mines in search of additional sources of income.
These activities pose high risks due to the lack of accurate maps of the caves, the unavailability of safety equipment, and the impact of heavy monsoon rains that cause flash floods and landslides.
