Poland has entered an unprecedented state of alert after the Ministry of Interior announced that the police suspect a possible assassination attempt on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defense Minister Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, in a development that has raised widespread concern within the country, which is already experiencing escalating security tensions.
Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Gajewska stated via the platform (X) that the ministry has issued urgent directives to authorities to take necessary measures, after receiving information indicating a potential threat targeting the Prime Minister and his deputy, who also holds the defense portfolio. An emergency meeting was held with representatives from the police, the State Protection Agency, and the Internal Security Agency to discuss the nature of the threat and its level of seriousness.
Jacek Dąbrowski, spokesperson for the Minister of Coordination of Special Security Services, clarified that the authorities are taking the matter very seriously, noting that security agencies are receiving “month after month, and year after year” more messages and threats targeting Poland and Poles, and that this particular situation carries a “significant likelihood” that the threats could be actionable.
These developments come as Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union, is on high alert following a series of stabbing attacks that occurred last week, which Tusk condemned as part of a “culture of violence” that is escalating within the country.
