The French Ministry of the Interior announced the deployment of 70,000 security personnel across the country next Saturday, in anticipation of potential violence during the upcoming protests coinciding with Halloween celebrations, amid official warnings of significant risks threatening public order.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated on Thursday that Saturday, October 31, represents a “serious danger” to security and public order, noting that extremist groups have called for violent gatherings in several French cities via social media platforms.
Nunez confirmed that authorities will respond firmly to any violations, particularly the gatherings expected to be organized starting at 8 PM local time, after the main demonstrations have concluded.
The minister explained that the calls for protests have come from elements of the labor movement, the far-left, and groups linked to the “Yellow Vests” movement, warning that some of the circulated messages include extremist calls.
This security deployment follows the participation of approximately 410,000 people in protests that took place in France last Saturday, during which authorities had deployed 70,000 security personnel in an effort to prevent a repeat of the looting and vandalism witnessed in French cities on October 17.
Union and student leaders have called for new protests next Saturday, alongside a national strike scheduled for November 5, in response to dissatisfaction with wages, rising living costs, and declining public services.
