The African Football Confederation (CAF) announced the return to a biennial format for the Africa Cup of Nations, instead of every four years.
CAF stated in a statement on its official website: “The Executive Committee of the African Football Confederation has unanimously decided to return the Africa Cup of Nations to be held every two years.”
Reasons for the Decision
The statement added: “This reevaluation and review process, among other reasons, came as a result of the realization that the proposed ‘African Nations League’ project, which was supposed to replace the Africa Cup of Nations and be held every two years, will need several years to be able to provide the massive financial resources necessary to ensure that CAF tournaments and African football can compete globally and achieve self-sufficiency.”
Upcoming Editions
The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be held in 2027, in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with subsequent editions scheduled for 2028, 2031, and 2033.
Due to the World Cup taking place in 2030, according to FIFA traditions, the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations or national team tournaments under other continental federations will not be held in the year of the World Cup.
