U.S. President Donald Trump has intensified his pressure on Ukraine, urging its people to choose a new president.
Today (Saturday), Trump accused President Volodymyr Zelensky of obstructing an agreement to end the war with Russia, just a day after a call he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump stated that Zelensky has wasted numerous opportunities to settle the war, accusing him of causing problems for the United States and the world by targeting Russian oil refineries. Trump demanded that his Ukrainian counterpart immediately stop these attacks, saying that he can make any decisions he wants, but targeting Russian refineries is not one of them. Trump sent a direct message to the Ukrainians, saying, “I suggest they choose a new leader so they can reach an agreement,” adding that it is time for a new president for Ukraine.
In separate remarks regarding Iran, Trump simply said, “We will study the matter,” without revealing details about potential steps his administration might take.
This U.S. escalation followed Trump’s decision to finalize a diesel supply agreement with Russia, according to Axios, citing a U.S. official familiar with the discussions, who said that Zelensky ignored about six U.S. requests to stop targeting Russian oil refineries.
The agreement has sparked a new dispute between Washington and Kyiv; Zelensky stated that he was surprised by it, describing it as “unfair and unjust,” considering it an unwarranted gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
These developments coincide with reports that U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner may head to Moscow in the coming two weeks as part of efforts to reach an agreement to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed yesterday that Moscow welcomes the visit of the U.S. envoys, noting that Putin is ready to meet with them. He added that Russia is prepared to listen to the ideas and proposals that the negotiators discuss with the Ukrainian side in the United States, should they decide to present them to the Russian leadership.
