The leader of the Spanish opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has sparked widespread controversy regarding his country’s stance on hosting the 2030 World Cup, should FIFA grant Morocco the right to host the final match.
The 2030 World Cup is set to take place in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host an opening match, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first edition of the tournament.
Competition for Hosting the Final
FIFA has not yet announced the stadium that will host the final match of the 2030 World Cup, amid competition between Morocco and Spain. However, the president of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, confirmed last September that the Hassan II Stadium, which costs about one billion dollars and is currently under construction, will host the final of the 2030 World Cup.
Threat to Withdraw
Feijóo, a candidate for the Spanish government presidency, stated in an interview with the Spanish program “El Chiringuito”: “Spain must host the World Cup final, and if that doesn’t happen, in my opinion, Spain should not participate in organizing the World Cup.”
When asked if he would seek to withdraw Spain from hosting the tournament if he came to power, he replied: “Yes, the answer is yes.”
