في ظل تصاعد الجدل السياسي داخل كندا بشأن مستقبل مقاطعة ألبرتا، حذّر رئيس الوزراء الكندي مارك كارني من أن الدعوات المطالبة بانفصال المقاطعة عن البلاد تمثل «خدعة خطيرة»، مؤكداً أنها قد تقود إلى نتائج يندم عليها مؤيدوها، على غرار ما حدث في تجربة خروج بريطانيا من الاتحاد الأوروبي «بريكست»، وفقاً لما نقلته صحيفة «فاينانشيال تايمز».
وقال كارني، الذي شغل سابقاً منصب محافظ بنك إنجلترا، إن كثيراً من البريطانيين الذين دعموا الانسحاب من الاتحاد الأوروبي عام 2016 باتوا اليوم يبدون ندمهم، مضيفاً: «ما حدث في المملكة المتحدة يوضح كيف يمكن للوعود البسيطة أن تتحول إلى تعقيدات طويلة الأمد».
وفي تصريحات لاحقة، شدد رئيس الوزراء الكندي على أن ألبرتا «جزء أساسي من مستقبل كندا»، مؤكداً أن وحدة البلاد تحقق فوائد اقتصادية واجتماعية لجميع المقاطعات.
وبحسب «فاينانشيال تايمز»، فإن كارني يسعى في الوقت ذاته إلى احتواء التوترات الداخلية عبر إعادة بناء الثقة مع حكومة ألبرتا، في ظل مساعٍ مشتركة لتعزيز قطاع الطاقة وتطوير مشاريع خطوط أنابيب جديدة تربط حقول النفط في المقاطعة بساحل كولومبيا البريطانية.
وتشير تقارير سياسية إلى أن النزعة الانفصالية في ألبرتا تحظى بدعم يقدر بنحو 30% من السكان، في وقت تواجه فيه كندا تحديات اقتصادية وسياسية، إلى جانب توترات مع الولايات المتحدة.
وفي المقابل، يرى معارضو الانفصال أن الدعوات المطروحة لا تعكس إجماعاً شعبياً، بل تقودها مجموعات محدودة داخل المقاطعة، بحسب ما نقلته مصادر سياسية محلية.
ويأتي هذا التحذير في وقت تشهد فيه ألبرتا نقاشات متزايدة حول إجراء استفتاء على الاستقلال، بعد إعلان رئيسة وزراء المقاطعة دانييل سميث عن خطوات تمهيدية نحو طرح خيار التصويت.
Amid the escalating political debate within Canada regarding the future of Alberta, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that calls for the province’s separation from the country represent a “dangerous illusion,” emphasizing that it could lead to outcomes that its supporters may regret, similar to what happened in the UK’s experience with Brexit, according to the Financial Times.
Carney, who previously served as the Governor of the Bank of England, stated that many Britons who supported leaving the European Union in 2016 now express regret, adding: “What happened in the United Kingdom illustrates how simple promises can turn into long-term complications.”
In subsequent remarks, the Canadian Prime Minister stressed that Alberta is “an essential part of Canada’s future,” affirming that the unity of the country brings economic and social benefits to all provinces.
According to the Financial Times, Carney is simultaneously seeking to contain internal tensions by rebuilding trust with the Alberta government, amidst joint efforts to enhance the energy sector and develop new pipeline projects connecting the province’s oil fields to the British Columbia coast.
Political reports indicate that the separatist sentiment in Alberta enjoys support estimated at around 30% of the population, at a time when Canada faces economic and political challenges, along with tensions with the United States.
In contrast, opponents of separation argue that the calls being made do not reflect a popular consensus but are driven by limited groups within the province, according to local political sources.
This warning comes at a time when Alberta is experiencing increasing discussions about holding a referendum on independence, following the announcement by the province’s Premier Danielle Smith of preliminary steps towards presenting the voting option.
