Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia today (Monday) of deliberately targeting civilians, following the death of 18 people and the injury of five others in an airstrike that hit a school in the town of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region of southeastern Ukraine.
Zelensky stated in a post on the platform “X” that the town had been subjected to a series of Russian airstrikes since the morning hours, one of which targeted the school where civilians received humanitarian aid on a weekly basis, emphasizing that Russian forces resumed bombing the site with nine aerial bombs after the first strike, despite civilians taking shelter inside.
The Ukrainian president described the attack as “extremely horrific,” noting that search and rescue operations are still ongoing, involving military forces, emergency teams, and specialized agencies, to find individuals who may be trapped under the rubble.
It has not been possible to independently verify the casualty figures or the details of the strikes, and no Russian comment has been issued regarding the Ukrainian accusations.
Zelensky considered that targeting the school, despite the Russian forces knowing it was used for distributing humanitarian aid, represents additional evidence that Moscow does not want to de-escalate or achieve a real peace, calling on the international community to take a strong stance against Russia and continue supporting his country to protect civilians.
This attack comes amid an escalation of Russian strikes on the Zaporizhzhia region, as Ukrainian authorities reported that 52 towns and sites were subjected to about 939 strikes in the previous 24 hours, including air raids, drone attacks, and artillery shelling, causing damage to homes, vehicles, and infrastructure facilities.
The escalation coincided with the end of a six-day humanitarian ceasefire in the town of Oleshky in the Russian-controlled Kherson region, which allowed for the evacuation of about 700 civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid, a rare step amid the ongoing war.
This is happening alongside American efforts to resume negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, amid discussions of a potential trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi during this November, after the Kremlin indicated the possibility of holding it in the first half of the month, without announcing a final date.
