The Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, inaugurated today, Wednesday, the 45th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair, announcing the launch of 143 volumes of the “Comprehensive Arabic Encyclopedia in Sciences, Literature, Arts, and Media,” as well as the establishment of an international award named after Harun al-Rashid, alongside a historical publication documenting the Portuguese presence in the Indian Ocean, which he completed over 37 years of research.

The fair is being held at the Sharjah Expo Center under the slogan “From the Makers of Stories” until November 15, with the presence of the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, and the Chairwoman of the Sharjah Book Authority, Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, with the Sultanate of Oman as the guest of honor for this edition.

The Ruler of Sharjah emphasized that serving humanity begins with caring for the mind and developing awareness, and that the emirate’s interest in books and scientific institutions aims to bring knowledge closer to the people. He explained that the fair provides an opportunity for readers to meet books and exchange knowledge and experiences among nations, encouraging new generations to research and think.

The opening of the edition was marked by the announcement of the comprehensive Arabic encyclopedia that began work last year, with more than 1,500 specialists from around the world participating in its preparation. The Ruler of Sharjah directed to intensify efforts and double the number of workers to complete it next year, while providing the necessary resources to make it available in print and electronically for readers and researchers.

He clarified that the project aims to build a reliable Arabic reference that gathers knowledge and facilitates access to it across various disciplines. He also launched the website for the encyclopedia, which documents the contributions of Arab and Islamic civilization in sciences, literature, and arts, and includes biographies of scholars, thinkers, writers, and historical figures.

He announced the launch of the “Harun al-Rashid Award in Sciences, Literature, Arts, and Media” to honor four individuals annually who have produced distinguished works in research, study, and authorship in the Arabic language. He affirmed that the award is a recognition of scientific contributions and encouragement to continue knowledge production and enrich the Arabic library.

Regarding the choice of the award’s name, he referred to what Harun al-Rashid provided in terms of services in supporting sciences, literature, and arts, and to the enduring impact of his contributions through the centuries, emphasizing the importance of justly recognizing this historical figure and highlighting his civilizational contributions.

The opening witnessed the signing of his latest work, “The Portuguese in the Indian Ocean: Events in Annals from 1497 to 1750,” which consists of 61 volumes in Arabic and the same in English. The work is based on original documents he collected from archives in Portugal, Spain, India, and other countries, which he then translated, edited, and arranged chronologically.

The publication documents the history of the Portuguese presence in the Indian Ocean, East Africa, India, and parts of Asia. The Ruler of Sharjah gifted copies of it to representatives of archival and scientific institutions in Portugal and Goa, expressing his hope that it will serve researchers, historians, and the history of the region and its peoples.

The Ruler of Sharjah honored the Moroccan researcher and academic Dr. Said Yaqtin as the cultural figure of the year, in recognition of his contributions to Arabic literature and criticism. He also honored the Catalan publishing house “Caravan,” which won the Sharjah Translation Award “Tarjuman” for 2026, for translating selections from “One Thousand and One Nights” into Catalan, completed by Margarida Castells Cripalis.

In her speech, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi reviewed the features of her upbringing in a home that celebrates books, and how her father’s passion for reading and history transformed into universities, institutions, and knowledge projects. She recalled his support for publishers by purchasing their books in the early days of the fair, until the event became part of the memory of generations and a meeting point for cultures around the world.

Yaqtin affirmed that his honor represents recognition of the efforts of Moroccan and Arab writers in serving culture, dialogue, and tolerance. Meanwhile, the Omani Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth, Saud bin Hilal Al Busaidi, stated that his country’s participation opens horizons for introducing its cultural achievements and enhancing cooperation in publishing, translation, scientific research, and the arts.

Following the opening, the Ruler of Sharjah visited the Omani pavilion, where he was briefed on its publications and cultural program, showcasing the history, heritage, and literature of the Sultanate, and received a collection of encyclopedias and historical books.
