The academic advisor in law, Dr. Hassan Radeef, considered that the Asian Football Confederation’s decision to postpone the match between Al-Nassr and Al-Wasl of the UAE, as part of the third round of the AFC Champions League, necessitates disclosing its legal justifications, ensuring transparency in decisions, fairness in competition, and equal opportunities among the participating clubs.
Radeef explained to “Okaz” that postponement decisions should be justified and based on legitimate reasons and clear legal grounds, pointing out that issuing a decision to postpone the match without relying on a legitimate reason could render it flawed from a legal standpoint and raise questions about the validity of the procedures taken.
He added that Al-Nassr’s move to request an explanation for the postponement decision is a legal procedure that allows for understanding the justifications that led the Asian Confederation to make its decision, and to verify their legitimacy according to the regulations in force in the tournament.
Radeef indicated that if it becomes clear that the reasons for the postponement are not legitimate, this may allow Al-Nassr to demand that Al-Wasl be considered withdrawn from the match, according to what the relevant regulations and rules permit, emphasizing that resolving the matter remains linked to the actual reasons for the decision and their compliance with legal frameworks.
The Asian Confederation had announced last Sunday the rescheduling of the match that was supposed to take place on Monday, October 26, at King Saud University Stadium in Riyadh, to a later date, without the published announcement including details of the reasons leading to the postponement.
In contrast, the Saudi Football Federation confirmed that all organizational and logistical arrangements to receive the Al-Wasl delegation have been completed, including flight permits and coordination with the relevant authorities, noting that the match observer and the refereeing crew arrived in Riyadh before the postponement decision was issued.
The Saudi Federation emphasized its full support for Al-Nassr in any legal actions it takes to preserve its rights, amid ongoing questions regarding the justifications for the decision and its implications for fairness in competition.
