The Israeli occupation army has raised its state of alert and readiness ahead of the elections scheduled for October 27, amid security concerns about attempts to disrupt the voting process, while Israeli media revealed military preparations for a new round of fighting with Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The Israeli website “Walla” reported that Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the army to raise the level of vigilance and readiness, after presenting security scenarios related to the possibility of escalation before or during the elections.
According to the website, the instructions came against a backdrop of fears that hostile entities to Israel might attempt to disrupt the electoral process, prompting the military establishment to take strict precautionary measures. These measures include preventing soldiers from leaving their bases, enhancing military operations rooms, and expanding intelligence-gathering activities. It was decided to raise the level of readiness for the forces deployed along the border, in anticipation of any sudden security developments in the days leading up to the voting.
The website noted that Katz is conducting ongoing assessments of the security situation, with the participation of relevant military and security entities, to review potential threats and prepare to address them.
These assessments include various fronts, both land and air, as well as distant threats that Israel may face.
Israeli media reported that a security source indicated the army is preparing for the possibility of a new round of fighting with Hezbollah. The nature of these preparations has not been disclosed, nor whether they are directly related to the election preparedness measures.
These developments come amid ongoing tension on the Lebanese front, despite the ceasefire agreement that came into effect in November 2006, and the subsequent disputes regarding the Israeli withdrawal, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and the future of Hezbollah’s weapons.
Israel continues to emphasize the necessity of removing security threats at its northern borders, while Lebanon insists on its demands to stop Israeli aggressions and withdraw from its territories.
The heightened alert measures reflect the Israeli security establishment’s fears of any military escalation coinciding with the election date, at a time when the possibilities of confrontation on multiple fronts remain present.
