The new British government website “Be Ready” has urged British families to store three liters of bottled water per person daily for drinking, and non-perishable food items such as canned meats, dried fruits, and nuts.
Essential supply chains are facing disruptions
British Health Minister Wes Streeting announced that citizens must approach national readiness and resilience to crises with the same seriousness as national defense. He questioned, “Are we prepared for increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks targeting our businesses? Are we ready for the possibility of essential supply chains being disrupted by hostile nations or terrorist groups? How will we cope if payment systems at the local grocery store fail? These are examples of the daily challenges we may face, and it is right that we are prepared for them,” according to a report by The Telegraph.
Yesterday (Thursday), 32 government services ceased operations, while four other services were only partially available, as British government departments worked to address cybersecurity concerns following a flaw discovered in the PHP programming language that allows hackers to infiltrate data traffic between websites and databases. This could enable them to uncover passwords, credit card information, and other sensitive data.
Vehicle inspection centers across Britain were forced to use pen and paper to record the results of technical safety tests (MOT) after the online platform of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency was shut down.
Confronting cyber risks
The National Cyber Security Centre, part of the British intelligence agency GCHQ, issued guidance to website owners to temporarily shut down their systems if they could not address the issue immediately. The Chair of the Defence Committee in the House of Commons, Tobias Ellwood, stated that the UK needs to “take strong action” to confront the increasing cyber risks associated with artificial intelligence.
He added, in an interview with BBC 5 Live, “It seems that artificial intelligence can be effectively used in a destructive manner to carry out cyberattacks against everyone… and we must be more cautious than ever.” He noted that Britain is the third most targeted country for cyberattacks.
Commercial fishing vessels for espionage
The newspaper reported that Russia is using commercial fishing vessels to spy on British undersea communication cables, which carry about 95% of transcontinental communication data, while the British internet system relies almost entirely on them for connection to the outside world.
Britain depends on a highly globalized food supply chain, importing between 45% and 50% of its food needs.
Last September, the British National Audit Office warned that food supply disruptions in Britain have become “more likely and potentially more severe” due to extreme weather, cyberattacks, and the spread of diseases.
