The French bank “Crédit Mutuel Arkéa” was subjected to a cyber attack that resulted in the theft of approximately 100 million euros ($112 million) through fraudulent financial transfers carried out by cybercriminals, while the bank confirmed that its clients’ funds were not affected by the attack.
The bank explained yesterday (Wednesday) that the attackers managed to access one of its accounts and make transfers to other banks, before converting the stolen funds into cryptocurrencies through specialized platforms.
It confirmed that the attack is under control, and part of the funds has been frozen, while efforts continue to recover the remaining amounts, noting that some financial transfers for clients were delayed without incurring financial losses.
The bank indicated that the attack was sophisticated and executed from outside the institution, ruling out that the fraudulent operations were due to human errors, without disclosing the identity of the attackers or the technical details of the breach.
While media reports indicated that the value of the stolen funds reached 118 million euros, the bank clarified that the final amount is still under evaluation, affirming that the losses will not affect its financial stability.
For its part, the public prosecutor’s office in Paris announced the opening of a judicial investigation into the attack, suspecting that an automated data processing system was targeted by an organized group.
This attack comes less than a week after the cryptocurrency trading platform “Binance” suffered a massive cyber breach that resulted in the theft of digital assets worth $6.3 billion, while the platform managed to freeze approximately $2.85 billion of the assets linked to the attack, confirming its commitment to compensating affected clients.
