The Jordanian artist Rakeen Saad revealed the significant transformations she underwent to portray the character of the heroine in the film (Owl), emphasizing that the experience required long preparations that included training in the use of a knife and immersing herself in environments completely different from her personal world.
Rakeen’s statements came after the success she achieved through the film, which culminated in her winning the Best Actress award at the El Gouna Film Festival, amidst widespread acclaim for her performance as a girl from the marginalized neighborhoods of the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The young artist confirmed that she was looking for a role that would take her out of familiar spaces and give her the opportunity to present a character that is fundamentally different from her nature and social background, noting that the challenge was not only superficial but also related to entering an entirely new human world. She explained that the first meeting with director Zaid Abu Hamdan lasted for about eight continuous hours, even though the meeting was initially scheduled for only one hour, due to the lengthy discussions about the character’s details and her psychological and social backgrounds, as well as the course of events.
Rakeen revealed that she spent about six months training in the use of a (knife) to make her movements appear natural and convincing on camera. She also underwent special physical training, in addition to multiple makeup trials to achieve the final look she presented in the work. She added that preparing for the character also included training in the local dialect, researching the lives of girls who live on the streets, and trying to understand the social and economic conditions surrounding this type of character. She pointed out that her biggest fear was to deliver a sincere performance for a character belonging to an environment she did not know much about; this drove her to spend time in popular areas and interact with people living in conditions similar to those depicted in the film.
Rakeen appeared in (Owl) in a different light compared to her previous roles, as she portrayed a sharp and strong character who grew up in a difficult environment, where she learned that survival requires asserting influence and facing challenges harshly. Her performance received widespread critical acclaim, marking the film as a significant milestone in her artistic career, especially since it required her to undergo a clear transformation in appearance, speech, movement, and interaction styles with the surrounding characters.
The character that Rakeen portrays serves as a model of a woman who does not seek protection as much as she strives to establish her own status, using strength and authority as a means of survival in a world that does not offer the weak many chances of escape.
