The death toll from the sinking of a boat carrying irregular migrants off the northwestern coast of Senegal has risen to 21, with one person surviving, according to the preliminary toll announced by the Senegalese Ministry of Interior today (Sunday).
The ministry stated in a statement that by Saturday evening, the recorded toll reached 21 bodies and one survivor, confirming that the relevant government agencies continue search and rescue operations in anticipation of finding other survivors, in addition to providing support to the families of the victims.
The incident occurred off the coast of the Kébémer area in the Louga region of northern Senegal, and the bodies of about 20 individuals were found on the Lompoul beach, according to the Senegalese news agency. Gendarmerie forces and firefighting teams participated in retrieving the bodies and transporting them for identification.
The circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and the authorities have not announced the total number of people who were on board the boat, nor its point of departure and intended destination. Local reports initially mentioned four fatalities before the toll increased as more bodies were found along the coast.
The Senegalese Ministry of Interior confirmed that authorities will continue their efforts to combat human trafficking networks, urging caution regarding the risks of irregular migration, amid the recurrence of drowning incidents on the country’s western coasts.
The incident comes at a time when the coasts of West Africa are witnessing a renewed activity of irregular migration trips towards the Spanish Canary Islands, which represent one of the gateways to Europe. Senegal, along with Mauritania and Gambia, is one of the main departure points for these journeys, which are often carried out by overcrowded wooden fishing boats that cover long distances in the Atlantic Ocean.
Data from the International Organization for Migration reveals the scale of the risks; it recorded 17,788 migrants arriving in the Canary Islands via the Atlantic route in 2025, while 54 incidents of boat distress or sinking were linked to the deaths or disappearances of 1,214 individuals. During the first half of 2026, 3,708 migrants arrived via this route, while 59 journeys were recorded in which boats failed to reach their destination, resulting in the deaths or disappearances of 168 individuals.
