Manchester City coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that his players did not show the required strength during the 3-1 loss to Nottingham Forest in the match held on the banks of the River Trent.
City fell behind by two goals within the first 20 minutes of the match, after Jaire Kounia and Liam Delap scored two brilliant goals for the home side.
Ryan Cherki reduced the deficit early in the second half with a stunning volley, giving City hope for a historic comeback, but Delap scored his second goal with a fantastic shot after a well-executed counterattack, sealing a deserved victory for Nottingham Forest.
Maresca spoke at the post-match press conference, which was reported by the club’s website, confirming that City’s failure to win duels in the first half was one of the main reasons for the defeat.
He said: “I will speak very clearly, when you do not match the strength of the opponent in the first half and lose all the duels, things become difficult, and then we try to come back, but it is often too late, and it is very clear, we were not good in the first half, and we did not show the strength required for such matches.”
Maresca continued: “We conceded the first goal and then the second, and after that, we tried to come back, but most of the time, when you are two goals down, it is too late. However, we started the second half much better, scored a goal, and we could have scored more, but we conceded the third goal from a counterattack after losing a duel.”
After winning their first seven matches in the Premier League this season, City has now suffered three consecutive defeats, falling six points behind leaders Arsenal after ten rounds.
Maresca confirmed that he will use the international break to analyze his team’s performance in recent matches and make the necessary changes.
He said: “We achieved seven consecutive wins, and now we have lost three consecutive matches, so we need to maintain balance in evaluating things, and now we have an international break, and as we did during the first break, we will use this time to try to identify areas we can improve.”
Maresca concluded his remarks by saying: “We know that there are some things we can do better, and we realize that we need to develop certain aspects, and we will use this period to understand how to avoid repeating such matches.”
