This meeting is the first of its kind in this format, amidst rising concerns about the expansion of regional conflicts. Tomorrow (Friday), the Turkish city of Istanbul will host a meeting of seven countries, including Saudi Arabia and three major European powers, to discuss developments in Yemen and the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, as well as the Palestinian issue and the Russian-Ukrainian war.
French news agency AFP reported from a source in the Turkish Foreign Ministry that the meeting, hosted by Ankara at its initiative, will bring together the foreign ministers of Britain, France, and Germany, which are part of the “E3” group, with their counterparts from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Egypt, under the “R4” format.
Yemen, Saudi security, and freedom of navigation are among the key issues on the agenda, as it is expected that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will emphasize the need to protect international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and to reach a diplomatic solution to the war between the United States and Iran, while renewing his country’s support for the security of the Kingdom in the face of attacks by the Houthi militia, according to the diplomatic source.
According to the source, the ministers will discuss opportunities to enhance cooperation between European countries and regional states, while Fidan will present Ankara’s efforts to prevent the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war from spilling over into the Black Sea, warning of the security risks posed by the continuation of the conflict, as reported by Reuters.
The talks gain significance amid rising military tensions in the region and increasing fears of renewed confrontation between the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other, and the potential threats this poses to regional security and international trade and shipping routes.
