The Egyptian Ministry of Interior denied allegations of suicides among inmates at a rehabilitation center in Alexandria, following claims of violations occurring within the center, and announced legal actions against those promoting these claims.
An security source, according to what was reported by Egyptian media, stated that the information circulated on social media pages affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood abroad regarding the alleged suicides of several inmates “is unfounded.”
The source accused those pages of attempting to stir confusion by fabricating lies and spreading rumors, confirming that legal measures are being taken against the promoters of these allegations, without providing additional details regarding the nature of the claims or the center in question.
This denial comes in the context of a recurring debate on social media regarding the conditions of inmates in rehabilitation centers in Egypt, as the Ministry of Interior has previously issued statements denying allegations related to suicide attempts, hunger strikes, and protests within detention centers.
In an earlier statement at the beginning of October, the ministry denied reports of protests, hunger strikes, and visitation bans, stating that conditions within the centers are normal and that visits are conducted in accordance with the law.
