In a stunning surprise, the South African team Sundowns was eliminated from the African Champions League in the Round of 32 after drawing with their Angolan guest Wiliete 1-1 in the match that took place on Friday evening.
The first leg ended in a goalless draw, but the Angolan team, which was founded in 2018, advanced to the group stage benefiting from the away goals rule.
Mapululu Eliminates Sundowns
Tashrik Matthews opened the scoring for Sundowns in the 11th minute, but Cristovao Mapululu equalized for Wiliete just four minutes into the second half, knocking the defending champion out of the tournament.
Negative Record for the Champion
The last time Sundowns failed to qualify for the group stage was in 2015, when they lost to Congolese team Mazembe.
Two Titles in 3 Weeks
It is worth mentioning that Sundowns won the title of “Asia, Africa, and Pacific Cup” last month at the expense of Al Ahly, before claiming the “MTN8” Cup title about three weeks later against Orlando Pirates.
