At a highly sensitive time, amid rising indicators of a return to military escalation in the region, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are intensifying their diplomatic efforts towards Iran to support mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran, and to create an atmosphere conducive to resuming negotiations and reaching an agreement that ends the crisis and spares the region a new wave of escalation.
Representatives from the Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense, including Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin, and Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, held talks in Tehran yesterday (Monday) with the Iranian President, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Mohsen, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The Iranian presidency reported that Bezhaskian announced during the meeting support for any understanding that leads to enhancing security in the region and readiness to take a step towards regional cooperation and resolving disputes.
Bezhaskian stated that Tehran demands its rights within the framework of international law and will firmly defend itself, expressing hope that major Islamic countries will play an effective role in enhancing regional stability.
The move by the three countries reflects their commitment to keeping the diplomatic track open and preventing a decline in the chances for de-escalation amid the sensitivity of the current phase, restoring stability in the region, and defusing anything that could jeopardize the chances of peace.
The importance and timing of the move stem from the nature of the issues related to the crisis, as the countries of the Mecca Alliance seek to support confidence-building measures and bring closer the viewpoints of Washington and Tehran, while considering the interests and security concerns of the countries in the region.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey expressed their hope that the United States and Iran would exhibit the highest degree of positive engagement with the current efforts to end the crisis and avoid a return to military escalation in the region.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed that the visit of Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and representatives of the Mecca Agreement countries to Tehran is part of efforts aimed at reducing escalation among the parties to the current crisis and encouraging dialogue and diplomatic solutions.
In a statement yesterday, it stated that the visit aims to contain the crisis and support mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan. It emphasized the importance of opening channels for negotiation to avoid a return to military escalation in the region and to reach an agreement that ends the crisis and enhances regional and international security and stability, expressing the Kingdom’s hope for the parties involved in the crisis to respond positively and practically to the outcomes of the visit.
