يتمسك وزير الحرب الأمريكي بيت هيغسيث بالبقاء في منصبه حتى نهاية ولاية الرئيس دونالد ترمب، رافضا الاستقالة رغم تصاعد الضغوط السياسية وتهديدات بعزله، مع اقتراب مجلس النواب من التصويت على مساءلته على خلفية إدارة الحرب الأمريكية ضد إيران.
ونقلت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال» عن تيم بارلاتوري، المستشار الخاص لهيغسيث، تأكيده أن الوزير لا يعتزم مغادرة منصبه، قائلا: «إنه لن يذهب إلى أي مكان»، وإنه يخطط للاستمرار في منصبه طوال السنوات الأربع لولاية ترمب.
وبحسب الصحيفة، بدأ هيغسيث التحرك لمواجهة مساعي عزله، مستعدا لخوض معركة سياسية داخل الكونغرس للدفاع عن أدائه وسياسات وزارة الحرب، في وقت تتزايد فيه الانتقادات الموجهة إليه حتى من داخل الحزب الجمهوري، على خلفية تداعيات الحرب مع إيران والخلافات بشأن إدارة العمليات العسكرية.
وتأتي هذه المواجهة قبل تصويت مرتقب في مجلس النواب الأسبوع المقبل على مشروع قرار لعزل الوزير، يقوده النائب الجمهوري توماس ماسي، الذي هدد بالمضي في الإجراءات فور عودة المجلس إلى الانعقاد، مؤكدا أنه لن يتراجع عن مساعيه إلا إذا قدم هيغسيث استقالته.
ويستند التحرك إلى اتهامات تتعلق بإدارة الحرب الأمريكية ضد إيران، إذ يرى منتقدو الوزير أن الإدارة بالغت في تقدير القدرات العسكرية الأمريكية والنتائج المتوقعة للضربات، فضلا عن استمرار العمليات العسكرية دون تفويض من الكونغرس، وهي من أبرز النقاط التي يستند إليها مشروع المساءلة.
وبحسب تقارير إعلامية أمريكية، فإن ماسي يعتزم طرح ثمانية بنود للمساءلة، في خطوة قد تحظى بدعم عدد من الديمقراطيين وبعض الجمهوريين، خصوصا في ظل تصاعد الخلافات داخل الحزب بشأن كلفة الحرب ونتائجها السياسية والعسكرية.
وفي المقابل، لا يزال ترمب يوفر غطاء سياسيا لوزير الحرب، إذ أكد الخميس أنه يعتزم الإبقاء عليه في منصبه، قائلا: «لدي كل النية للإبقاء عليه»، رغم إقراره بتلقي اتصالات وشكاوى من أطراف غير راضية عن أداء هيغسيث.
وكان ترمب قد دافع عن الوزير أيضا عقب خسارة الجمهوريين انتخابات التجديد النصفي، فيما كشفت تقارير صحفية أنه أجرى مشاورات مع حلفائه بشأن مستقبله السياسي، وسط انقسام داخل فريقه حول التعامل مع الحرب على إيران والمرحلة المقبلة.
وفي تصعيد للمواجهة، نشر هيغسيث رسالة مصورة عبر منصة «إكس»، وصف فيها مساعي عزله بأنها «مسرحية سياسية»، معتبرا أنها امتداد لمحاولات سابقة استهدفت ترمب، ومؤكدا أن هذه التحركات لن تدفعه إلى التراجع أو مغادرة منصبه.
وتكشف الأزمة عن اتساع الانقسام داخل المعسكر الجمهوري بشأن إدارة المواجهة مع إيران، إذ لم تعد الانتقادات مقتصرة على الديمقراطيين، بل امتدت إلى شخصيات جمهورية ترى أن استمرار الحرب وتداعياتها الاقتصادية والسياسية أسهما في الهزيمة الانتخابية للحزب.
وفي هذا السياق، قال رئيس لجنة الرقابة بمجلس النواب جيمس كومر إن لدى المشرعين تساؤلات عديدة بشأن أداء هيغسيث واستراتيجية الإدارة الأمريكية لإنهاء الحرب مع إيران، فيما حذر السيناتور الجمهوري توم تيليس من أن الوزير يواجه تداعيات سياسية متزايدة، مع إبدائه ندمه على التصويت سابقا لصالح بقائه في منصبه.
وتعززت الضغوط على هيغسيث عقب انتخابات التجديد النصفي التي جرت في 3 نوفمبر الجاري، وأسفرت عن فوز الديمقراطيين بأغلبية مجلسي النواب والشيوخ، في هزيمة انتخابية واسعة للجمهوريين، على أن يتولى الديمقراطيون السيطرة على المجلسين اعتبارا من يناير 2027.
وتضع هذه النتيجة إدارة ترمب أمام واقع سياسي أكثر تعقيدا، إذ ستواجه أجندته التشريعية رقابة أشد من الكونغرس، كما يعتزم الديمقراطيون فتح تحقيقات بشأن عدد من ملفات الإدارة، بما فيها إدارة الحرب والقرارات العسكريةط.
وفي تطور يعكس حساسية المرحلة، نفى مقربون من هيغسيث سعيه للحصول على مقعد السيناتورة الجمهورية مارشا بلاكبيرن في ولاية تينيسي، بعد فوزها بمنصب حاكم الولاية، فيما أفادت تقارير بأن بلاكبيرن لا تدرس تعيينه خلفا لها في مجلس الشيوخ، وهو ما ينفي التكهنات بشأن انتقال الوزير إلى العمل التشريعي باعتباره مخرجا محتملا من أزمة منصبه.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Tim Parlatore, Hegseth’s special advisor, confirmed that the secretary does not intend to leave his position, stating, “He’s not going anywhere,” and that he plans to continue in his role throughout Trump’s four-year term.
According to the newspaper, Hegseth has begun to take action to counter efforts to impeach him, ready to engage in a political battle within Congress to defend his performance and the policies of the Department of War, at a time when criticisms directed at him are increasing even from within the Republican Party, amid the repercussions of the war with Iran and disagreements over the management of military operations.
This confrontation comes ahead of an anticipated vote in the House next week on a resolution to impeach the secretary, led by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who has threatened to proceed with the measures as soon as the House reconvenes, asserting that he will not back down from his efforts unless Hegseth submits his resignation.
The move is based on accusations related to the management of the U.S. war against Iran, as critics of the secretary believe that the administration has overestimated U.S. military capabilities and the expected outcomes of the strikes, in addition to the continuation of military operations without congressional authorization, which are among the main points cited in the impeachment resolution.
According to U.S. media reports, Massie intends to introduce eight articles of impeachment, in a move that may receive support from several Democrats and some Republicans, especially amid rising disagreements within the party regarding the cost of the war and its political and military outcomes.
In contrast, Trump continues to provide political cover for the Secretary of War, having confirmed on Thursday that he intends to keep him in his position, stating, “I have every intention of keeping him,” despite acknowledging receiving calls and complaints from dissatisfied parties regarding Hegseth’s performance.
Trump also defended the secretary following the Republicans’ loss in the midterm elections, while reports revealed that he consulted with his allies regarding Hegseth’s political future, amid divisions within his team over how to handle the war with Iran and the next phase.
In an escalation of the confrontation, Hegseth posted a video message on the platform “X,” describing the efforts to impeach him as a “political theater,” considering it an extension of previous attempts targeting Trump, and affirming that these moves will not push him to retreat or leave his position.
The crisis reveals a widening divide within the Republican camp regarding the management of the confrontation with Iran, as criticisms are no longer limited to Democrats but have extended to Republican figures who believe that the continuation of the war and its economic and political repercussions contributed to the party’s electoral defeat.
In this context, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer stated that lawmakers have numerous questions regarding Hegseth’s performance and the U.S. administration’s strategy to end the war with Iran, while Republican Senator Thom Tillis warned that the secretary faces increasing political repercussions, expressing regret for previously voting in favor of his remaining in office.
Pressure on Hegseth intensified following the midterm elections held on November 3, which resulted in Democrats winning a majority in both the House and Senate, marking a significant electoral defeat for Republicans, with Democrats set to take control of both chambers starting January 2027.
This outcome places the Trump administration in a more complicated political reality, as its legislative agenda will face greater scrutiny from Congress, and Democrats intend to open investigations into several administration files, including the management of the war and military decisions.
In a development that reflects the sensitivity of the situation, close associates of Hegseth denied that he is seeking the Republican Senate seat of Marsha Blackburn in Tennessee, after she won the governorship of the state, while reports indicated that Blackburn is not considering appointing him as her successor in the Senate, which dispels speculation about the minister transitioning to legislative work as a potential exit from the crisis of his position.
