The President of Portugal, Antonio José Seguro, sent a message to the national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo following his retirement from international play today (Thursday).
Seguro said in a message published by the official account of the Portuguese presidency on Instagram: “On behalf of Portugal, I would like to thank Cristiano Ronaldo for the way he represented the national team, inspired the Portuguese people, and carried the name of Portugal around the world.”
A Difficult Day
The Portuguese president added: “I imagine that this day is one of the hardest days in Cristiano Ronaldo’s sports career, but I am confident that, as has happened on many occasions, the Portuguese people will stand by him.”
He concluded his message by saying: “I also know that Portugal will continue to rely on his love for his country, which he will always represent with the same dedication and commitment he has shown in every training session, every match, and every goal that brought joy to everyone’s hearts. Wishing you all the best, Cristiano, and thank you very much.”
Exceptional Numbers in a Historic International Career
Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international play came weeks after his dispute with Portugal’s coach, Jorge Jesus, and his departure from the national team’s camp, before he faced a one-month suspension and a fine of 255 euros.
Ronaldo scored 146 goals in 234 matches wearing the Portugal national team jersey, achieving two world records in men’s international football. He also led his country, known as the “Brazil of Europe,” to win the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League twice.
