وبدأت الكارثة ببطاقة حمراء للمدافع «يايا سيثول» في الدقيقة 49، ليصبح أول مطرود في البطولة الموسعة بمشاركة 48 منتخباً،وقبل نهاية اللقاء، انضم له زميله بالطرد الثاني، ليترك المنتخب الجنوب أفريقي المباراة ناقصاً منذ وقت مبكر.
واستغلت المكسيك النقص العددي وحسمت النتيجة بهدفي «جوليان كينيونيس» في الدقيقة 9، وراؤول خيمينيز في الدقيقة 67، لتحقق بداية مثالية وسط 87 ألف متفرج.
