The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, described the attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as a “serious escalation,” calling on the Iran-backed Houthis to stop attacks on civilian targets, warning of the repercussions of the escalation on regional security and global transport and energy.
Von der Leyen stated on (Sunday) that the attacks carried out by Iran-backed groups “are driving the region into a spiral of violence,” noting that they destabilize vital centers for transport and energy and have repercussions on the world. She added, “These bloody attacks on civilians must stop immediately,” reaffirming the European Union’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its people.
This European stance came after the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation announced that the attack on the airport on (Saturday) afternoon resulted in the deaths of 12 people and injuries to 309 others, including those in critical condition. The list of the deceased included Saudi citizens and individuals from Bangladesh, the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan.
The spokesman for the coalition forces, Major General Turki Al-Maliki, accused the Houthi group of carrying out the attack on one of the airport’s passenger terminals, considering it a “war crime in all its elements” according to international humanitarian law and its customary rules, vowing a firm response in accordance with those rules. This characterization remains a declared position of the coalition and not a final judicial ruling.
The attack comes amid a continuous escalation witnessed in Riyadh over the week, after previous attacks targeting the airport on (Thursday) resulted in the deaths of three people, according to Saudi authorities. These developments coincided with renewed clashes in Yemen, following the collapse of the truce that had eased the intensity of fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces since 2022.
Attacks on airports are particularly significant due to their role in passenger movement and international flights, as well as their connection to transport and supply networks. The recent attack led to a temporary suspension of operations at King Khalid Airport while damage was assessed and the safety of facilities was verified, causing disruptions in flight operations and the diversion or cancellation of some flights.
Reactions were not limited to the European Union; UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, emphasizing that targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a violation of international law, and calling for an immediate halt to these attacks. The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, described the attack as a “horrific terrorist act,” stressing that there is no justification for indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian facilities.
The escalation raises concerns about broader implications for the security of navigation and transport in the region, especially amid tensions affecting the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb, which are critical corridors for global trade.
