A study conducted by scientists from Yale University has revealed that the hormone “cortisol,” which the body releases in response to stress, may make certain emotional experiences more firmly embedded in memory by altering the way brain networks responsible for detecting emotions, forming memories, and coordinating them operate.

The results showed that the effect of stress on memory is more complex than the belief that psychological pressure always weakens the ability to remember. Cortisol can give the brain priority for information that a person considers important or emotionally stimulating, making it more likely to remain in memory for a longer period.

Stress Hormone and Memory

Cortisol is naturally released when a person is exposed to a stressful or threatening situation, helping the body respond quickly to stress.

However, the researchers wanted to understand what happens inside the brain when the level of this hormone rises during memory formation, and why a person sometimes clearly remembers the details of a highly emotional situation while ordinary events that occurred during the same period fade away.

Researcher Elizabeth Goldfarb from Yale School of Medicine stated that the body’s response to stress serves an adaptive function and can help a person form strong memories of events they consider emotionally significant.

26 Participants Under Imaging

The study included 26 participants who underwent a double-blind experiment; during one session, they received a dose of 20 milligrams of “hydrocortisone,” a medicinal form of cortisol, and in another session, they received a placebo.

During the experiment, participants viewed a series of images and scenes while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), which allowed scientists to track changes in brain activity and communication between its regions during memory formation.

After 24 hours, the researchers tested the participants’ ability to recall what they had seen and compared the results between the session in which cortisol levels rose and the other session.

Emotional Memories Last Longer

The results showed that cortisol enhanced participants’ ability to remember information they considered more emotionally stimulating, while the same effect was not clearly observed with neutral information.

In other words, the stress hormone did not make memory stronger for everything; rather, it seemed to help the brain identify what it considers emotionally important and prioritize it during the storage process.

The researchers believe this mechanism may be evolutionarily beneficial; humans need to remember significant or threatening situations to respond better if they encounter a similar situation in the future.

Changes Within Brain Networks

The effect of cortisol was not limited to a single area of the brain; MRI analysis revealed changes in multiple networks that work together when processing emotions and forming memories.

The networks associated with determining the significance of emotional events became more stable and active under the influence of cortisol, while the networks responsible for memory formation became more specialized in handling emotional information.

Coordination and overlap between the networks responsible for emotional arousal and those linked to memory increased, indicating that the stress hormone helps these different brain systems work together more closely when a person faces an event of emotional significance.

Brain Snapshots Every 5 Seconds

The scientists used an advanced analysis method that allowed them to monitor communication patterns between brain regions during short periods of about five seconds for each trial, instead of relying solely on average brain activity over several minutes.

This approach enabled the researchers to separate the networks that predict how emotionally affected a person will be by a specific image from the networks that predict whether they will remember that image the next day.

This helped demonstrate that cortisol does not simply “turn on memory,” but reorganizes the way different brain networks collaborate when dealing with emotional experiences.

Not All Stress is Beneficial

The results do not imply that stress always improves memory or that increased cortisol is beneficial; previous research indicates that severe or chronic stress can negatively impact memory, mental health, and other bodily functions.

The study clarifies that the effect depends on the nature of the information, the intensity of the experience, and its timing, and that cortisol may selectively strengthen memories associated with events that a person perceives as significant or emotionally charged.

The findings may help scientists in the future understand the mechanisms associated with disorders characterized by intense and persistent emotional memories, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, although the current study focused on memory formation mechanisms and did not test a treatment for these disorders.
