Nineteen people were killed and 25 others were injured last night (Saturday) due to a stampede that occurred during a festival in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal state in eastern India, including children, after sudden rains and heavy congestion caused crowds of participants to rush towards one of the celebration sites, leading to some falling and being trampled in a state of chaos and panic.
A girl among the victims and critical condition among the injured
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Souvindo Adhikari, confirmed that among the victims of the stampede was a seven-year-old girl, noting that the injured were transferred to hospitals for treatment.
Indian media reported that among the victims were 13 women and one child, explaining that the stampede occurred due to the heavy congestion after a crowd of participants tried to move to a closed area to shelter from the heavy rains that fell during the festival.
