Reports of cracks in the internal screen of the foldable “iPhone Duo,” which appeared among some early buyers after just hours of use, have raised questions about the durability of the new device, with the causes of the malfunctions and their extent still unclear.
Technology sites, including “MacRumors” and “Digital Trends,” reported that users shared images of damaged devices showing cracks and glowing lines near the screen hinge, with reports coming from Australia, the United States, Canada, and China.
Among the cases that received widespread attention was a complaint from a user in Australia who said that his phone’s screen cracked after about six hours of owning the device and after less than 20 openings. He explained that he felt something unusual beneath the screen near the hinge while opening the phone, before hearing a cracking sound, despite not noticing any visible signs of damage on the screen or the external hinge.
The user stated that the “Apple” store immediately replaced the damaged device, but this case, along with other circulated images, is not sufficient on its own to prove a design flaw in the phone or to determine the cause of the damage.
Concerns are focused on the similarity of the damage location in several images, as the damage appears near the area where the screen bends when opening and closing the phone. Users have suggested possibilities related to internal pressure on the screen or an issue with one of the hinge components or the precision of the assembly of parts, although these explanations remain hypotheses that have not been confirmed by announced technical inspection results.
In contrast, some early reviewer tests did not report similar malfunctions despite subjecting the device to repeated folding operations. “MacRumors” noted that one durability test exceeded 32,000 folding operations without significant changes in the feel of the hinge during use, although these tests remain limited and do not necessarily represent the performance of all sold devices.
The controversy comes after “Apple” launched its first foldable phone for sale on October 23. The company states that the device features a 7.6-inch internal screen, a precisely designed hinge, and protective layers and materials designed to withstand daily use, including glass layers and adhesive materials that allow movement between the screen layers when folded.
Foldable phones face an engineering challenge of combining a large flexible screen with a hinge mechanism that can withstand repeated movement while minimizing pressure on sensitive parts at the bending area. Previous generations of this category have seen complaints related to screens, making durability assessment an important factor in consumer confidence in this type of device.
“Apple” has not yet announced a specific reason for these cases or any general defect that would warrant widespread action. Additionally, there is no reliable number indicating the number of damaged devices compared to total sales, so it remains early to describe what happened as a comprehensive design problem.
