Informed sources revealed to Reuters that American and South Korean officials see little chance of a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un this year.
The sources reported that the United States has not received any response from North Korea regarding a meeting between Trump and Kim, and that there is very little time left before a regional summit in China next month, where this meeting could take place.
North Korean state media pointed out that Pyongyang will impose strict conditions for agreeing to a bilateral summit, which may include lifting sanctions, even as Kim’s influential sister stated that the relationship between the two leaders is “excellent.”
Trump announced in August that he plans to meet Kim later this year, and that the North Korean leader responded positively to his initiative.
The South Korean intelligence agency informed lawmakers late last month that there is a 50% chance of a meeting between Trump and Kim on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled for November 18-19 in Shenzhen, China.
However, Trump, who met Kim three times during his first term, downplayed the likelihood of such a meeting during the APEC forum or a regional summit in the Philippines, also scheduled for November. He told reporters at the White House: “I have a very good relationship with him, and I’m not sure anyone is asking for a meeting.”
Another South Korean official familiar with the matter stated that Pyongyang has not taken any steps indicating that it is preparing for a meeting with Trump. All of these individuals spoke on the condition of anonymity to convey private discussions.
In response to a request for comment, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said: “Although it is difficult to predict a specific timeline, the government will continue to make the necessary diplomatic efforts in close coordination with the United States to hold talks between the U.S. and North Korea as soon as possible.”
The South Korean ambassador to Washington, Kang Kyung-wha, confirmed last week that no concrete progress has been made toward holding a summit between Trump and Kim.
A senior U.S. official told reporters last month that Trump is willing to talk to Kim, and that the ball is largely in North Korea’s court now.
