U.S. Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran as the main reason for the Republicans’ loss in the midterm elections, considering that the defeat was not due to weak voter turnout, but rather because a segment of voters who supported President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the 2024 elections shifted their votes to Democratic candidates.
Vance stated today (Wednesday) in a post on the platform “X” that party voters participated in the voting, but many of them chose to vote for Democrats, emphasizing that any serious discussion about the party’s future must begin by acknowledging the role of the war in this loss.
The U.S. Vice President referenced the results of a polling expert predicting a 13-point lead for Democrats over Republicans in the general party preference for the congressional elections, noting that the polls indicated a sense of anger among some Trump voters in the 2024 elections, leading them to vote in favor of Democrats.
He explained that the expert asked these voters about the demands that could bring them back to support Republicans, and four main demands emerged from their responses: ending the war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, adhering to the “America First” slogan, and changing the relationship with Israel.
Vance considered that these demands explain the shift of votes from some Republican supporters to Democrats, relying on what he described as the accuracy of the polling expert’s predictions of the results.
In another assessment of the reasons for the loss, Vance quoted a second polling expert saying that the economic messages from Republicans were not clear enough during the final phase of the campaign, affirming his confidence in the validity of this assessment.
In contrast, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called for an end to the war with Iran, hinting at the possibility of using his party’s anticipated majority in Congress to leverage government spending controls to pressure the U.S. administration to stop it.
Schumer told reporters today, “This war must stop, it must end,” noting that Congress’s authority over spending represents one of the possible tools to deter a president waging war without the approval of the American people.
