The Peruvian authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than three thousand spiders that were on their way to Germany, after they were found hidden inside dirty socks placed in travel bags at Jorge Chavez International Airport.
According to the National Forest and Wildlife Service of Peru, unusual movement within the luggage raised the suspicions of customs officials during a routine inspection, revealing thousands of spiders (of the tarantula type) hidden inside between 15 and 22 socks distributed across three bags.
The authorities detained two Germans and a Polish citizen on suspicion of their involvement in the attempt to smuggle the spiders, in preparation for legal action against them.
The relevant authorities clarified that the seized spiders belong to multiple species and different stages of growth, including eggs, juvenile spiders, and adult specimens, collected from various regions in Peru.
They pointed out that the high demand for these spiders in European markets is due to their distinctive sizes and colors, with the value of a single spider reaching around 500 euros, raising the total value of the seized shipment to about 1.5 million euros.
The illegal wildlife trade is considered one of the most profitable activities globally, with Interpol estimates indicating that its annual revenues reach around 20 billion dollars.
