The Arab League condemned the renewed Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, considering that targeting civil aviation facilities and endangering the lives of travelers and workers represents a serious escalation and a threat to the security and stability of the region.
The League affirmed, in a statement, its firm rejection of the assaults targeting the territory of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that the repeated targeting of civil aviation facilities constitutes a violation of international law and threatens the safety of civilians and international air navigation.
The League reiterated its full solidarity with the Kingdom and its support for the measures it takes to protect its security, the safety of its territory, its citizens, and residents, affirming that the security of Saudi Arabia is an integral part of Arab national security.
It also expressed its sincere condolences to the Kingdom and the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery for the injured, following the attack that resulted in casualties among civilians, according to the statement.
The Arab position comes amid rising concerns about the repercussions of targeting civilian facilities and vital infrastructure, especially airports, due to the direct risks these attacks pose to travelers and workers, as well as their potential impacts on air traffic and the confidence of airlines in the security of regional routes.
King Khalid International Airport holds strategic importance as one of the prominent air transport hubs in the Kingdom, serving the capital Riyadh and connecting it to domestic and international destinations, making any targeting of it extend beyond its immediate effects to concerns related to civil aviation security and travel movement.
The Kingdom has witnessed attacks targeting Abha and King Khalid airports, with previous attacks in early October resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to dozens. The Houthis claimed responsibility for a missile attack on King Khalid Airport on October 8, according to Reuters.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation announced the death of 12 people, including 4 Saudi citizens and 8 residents of different nationalities, including two residents of Bangladeshi nationality, and one resident from each of the American, Egyptian, Jordanian, Syrian, Palestinian, and Sudanese nationalities. Additionally, 309 others were injured in the attack that targeted King Khalid Airport (on Saturday).
