عجيب أمرنا مع «التنوع». نردد هذه الكلمة في كل مؤلفاتنا ومحافلنا وكأنها عصا سحرية تزيل تهمة الانغلاق، ونرفعها شعاراً في كل خطاباتنا عن الثقافة والمجتمع وقبول الآخر. لكن ما إن يختبرنا الواقع، وتطل علينا ملامح التنوع الحقيقي، حتى نصاب بالهلع. نتراجع فوراً حين نصطدم بمن يفكر بطريقة لا نفهمها، أو بمن يحمل ذاكرة لا تشبه ذاكرتنا، أو ينظر إلى تفاصيل الحياة من نافذة عالية لم نجرؤ يوماً على الوقوف عندها.
فنحن لا نحب إلا التنوع الذي يشبهنا قليلاً. ذلك الديكور الآمن الذي يُشعرنا بالتقدم دون أن يزعج استقرارنا.
أما الاختلاف الحقيقي، الاختلاف الخشن المزعج الذي لا يمكن تزيينه أو تهذيبه، فهو يضعنا وجهاً لوجه أمام سؤال جارح ومؤرق: هل فعلاً نريد أن نرى الآخر كما هو؟ أم أن غايتنا هي أن نصنع منه «نسخة مكررة» منا، تكرر أخطاءنا وتصفق لآرائنا؟
هنا تحديداً تكمن العقدة: حين تتحوّل «الخصوصية» من مجرد دفء داخلي واعتزاز عفوي بالهوية، إلى أسمنت مسلح وجدار خرساني عالٍ. أن أعرف من أنا، ومن أين أتيت، هو أمر صحي وضروري. لكن الطامة الكبرى تبدأ حين يتوهم الإنسان أن معرفته بذاته تمنحه توكيلاً لتعريف الآخرين، وتصنيفهم، وتحديد مسارهم. حينها يفسد الاعتزاز بالهوية ويتحول إلى عزلة مروعة.
ولعل أكثر ما يدعو للأسى هو ارتباكنا الدائم بين «فهم الآخر» و«الموافقة عليه». لقد صنعنا في عقولنا معادلة زائفة توهمنا بأن محاولة الإنصات لثقافة مختلفة، أو محاولة فهم فكرة شاردة، تعني بالضرورة أننا نوقّع صك تنازل ونقبلها بكل تفاصيلها وعلاتها.
الآخر يا سادة ليس مؤامرة، ولا يمثل خطراً داهماً لمجرد أنه وُلِد في الجهة المقابلة، وليس عدواً أبدياً لمجرد أن عدسته ترى العالم بألوان أخرى.
وأسوأ ما ترتكبه الخصوصية حين تغلق أبوابها وتسدل ستائرها، هو أنها تحبس صاحبها داخل قفص صغير من التعريفات الضيقة، ثم تهمس في أذنه شعوراً كاذباً بأنه يملك مفاتيح الحقيقة.. وهو لا يرى سوى جدران غرفته الضيقة.
Our relationship with “diversity” is quite strange. We repeat this word in all our writings and gatherings as if it were a magic wand that removes the accusation of being closed-minded, and we raise it as a banner in all our speeches about culture, society, and acceptance of others. However, as soon as reality tests us, and the true features of diversity appear before us, we become alarmed. We immediately retreat when we encounter someone who thinks in a way we do not understand, or someone who carries a memory that is different from ours, or who views the details of life from a high window we have never dared to stand at.
We only like the diversity that resembles us a little. That safe decor that makes us feel progressive without disturbing our stability.
As for real difference, the rough, annoying difference that cannot be beautified or refined, it puts us face to face with a painful and troubling question: Do we really want to see the other as they are? Or is our goal to create a “replicated version” of ourselves, one that repeats our mistakes and applauds our opinions?
Here lies the crux of the matter: when “privilege” transforms from mere internal warmth and spontaneous pride in identity, into reinforced concrete and a high concrete wall. Knowing who I am and where I came from is healthy and necessary. But the real disaster begins when a person deludes themselves that their self-knowledge grants them the authority to define others, classify them, and determine their paths. At that point, pride in identity corrupts and turns into a terrifying isolation.
Perhaps what is most lamentable is our constant confusion between “understanding the other” and “agreeing with them.” We have constructed a false equation in our minds that misleads us into thinking that attempting to listen to a different culture, or trying to understand an errant idea, necessarily means that we are signing a waiver and accepting it in all its details and flaws.
The other, ladies and gentlemen, is not a conspiracy, nor does he represent an imminent danger simply because he was born on the opposite side, nor is he an eternal enemy just because his lens sees the world in different colors.
And the worst thing that privilege does when it closes its doors and draws its curtains is that it traps its owner inside a small cage of narrow definitions, then whispers in their ear a false feeling that they possess the keys to the truth… while they see nothing but the walls of their narrow room.
