قُتل رجل يبلغ من العمر 42 عاماً برصاص عنصر أمن داخل محكمة فيدرالية بمدينة ناشفيل بولاية تينيسي الأمريكية، بعدما دخل المبنى مسلحاً وحاول إطلاق النار من مسدسه، إلا أن السلاح لم يعمل، قبل أن يُخرج سكيناً، في واقعة أثارت حالة استنفار أمني وأدت إلى إغلاق المنطقة المحيطة بالمحكمة.
ووقعت الحادثة قرابة الساعة 9:30 صباح الخميس داخل مبنى «فريد دي. تومسون» الفيدرالي والمحكمة، الواقع في شارع تشيرش وسط ناشفيل.
وقالت شرطة ناشفيل إن الرجل وصل إلى المدخل الرئيسي للمحكمة، الذي يستخدمه معظم الموظفين والمراجعين ويضم نقطة تفتيش أمنية، وكان بحوزته مسدس وسكين.
وبحسب السلطات، حاول الرجل إطلاق النار من المسدس، إلا أنه لم يعمل، قبل أن يُشهر سكيناً، لتتطور المواجهة سريعاً ويطلق عنصر أمن فيدرالي النار عليه.
وفاته بعد نقله إلى المستشفى
وأصابت الطلقات الرجل، الذي نُقل إلى أحد مستشفيات المنطقة، إلا أنه توفي متأثراً بإصابته، فيما لم تسجل أي إصابات بين أفراد الأمن خلال الحادثة.
وحدد مكتب التحقيقات في ولاية تينيسي هوية الرجل بأنه «جاك هينسون الثاني»، البالغ 42 عاماً، موضحاً أن التحقيقات لا تزال مستمرة لتحديد التسلسل الكامل للأحداث التي سبقت إطلاق النار.
وكانت الشرطة قد أفادت بأن الرجل قدم من خارج ولاية تينيسي، دون الكشف عن مزيد من التفاصيل بشأن محل إقامته أو سبب وجوده في المحكمة.
لماذا دخل المحكمة مسلحاً؟
ولا تزال السلطات تحاول تحديد الدافع وراء دخول هينسون إلى المحكمة وهو يحمل مسدساً وسكيناً، إذ لم تكشف التحقيقات حتى الآن عما إذا كان يستهدف شخصاً بعينه أو كانت لديه قضية أو موعد داخل المبنى.
وفتشت فرق الأمن سيارته التي كانت متوقفة بالقرب من المحكمة، إلا أن الشرطة قالت إنها لم تعثر داخلها على أي شيء يمثل تهديداً إضافياً.
انتشار أمني وإغلاق مكتبة
وأعقب إطلاق النار انتشار مكثف لعناصر الأمن حول المحكمة، فيما شوهد رجال شرطة وكلاب بوليسية يجرون عمليات تفتيش في محيط المبنى.
كما أُغلقت المكتبة العامة المجاورة للمحكمة احترازياً، وخرج موظفون من مبانٍ قريبة إلى الشوارع مع استمرار الإجراءات الأمنية.
ويضم مبنى المحكمة مكتب المدعي العام الفيدرالي المحلي، إضافة إلى مكاتب لعضوي مجلس الشيوخ الأمريكي عن ولاية تينيسي، وهو ما أدى إلى تشديد الإجراءات الأمنية عقب الحادثة.
واقعة غير مسبوقة في المبنى
وقال مساعد المدعي العام الأمريكي الأول روب ماكغواير إن المحكمة شهدت سابقاً حوادث أمنية مرتبطة بأشخاص تصرفوا بصورة غير مناسبة واستدعت إخراجهم من المبنى، إلا أنها لم تشهد واقعة تقترب في خطورتها من حادثة الخميس.
وأضاف أن الحادث أثار حالة من القلق بين الموجودين داخل المحكمة، ودفع عدداً من الموظفين إلى الاتصال بعائلاتهم لطمأنتهم بعد تأمين المبنى.
التحقيق مستمر
ويتولى مكتب التحقيقات في تينيسي التحقيق في الواقعة بطلب من المدعي العام للمنطقة القضائية العشرين وخدمة المارشالات الأمريكية.
وأكد المكتب أن محققيه يعملون على جمع الأدلة وإجراء المقابلات وتحديد تسلسل الأحداث، على أن تُحال نتائج التحقيق إلى المدعي العام لمراجعتها واتخاذ القرار بشأن ملابسات استخدام القوة من جانب عنصر الأمن.
A 42-year-old man was shot dead by a security officer inside a federal courthouse in Nashville, Tennessee, after he entered the building armed and attempted to fire his gun, but the weapon malfunctioned, before he pulled out a knife, in an incident that triggered a security alert and led to the closure of the area surrounding the courthouse.
The incident occurred around 9:30 AM on Thursday inside the “Fred D. Thompson” federal building and courthouse, located on Church Street in downtown Nashville.
Nashville police stated that the man arrived at the main entrance of the courthouse, which is used by most employees and visitors and includes a security checkpoint, and was in possession of a gun and a knife.
According to authorities, the man attempted to fire the gun, but it did not work, before brandishing a knife, leading to a rapid escalation of the confrontation and a federal security officer firing at him.
Death after being taken to the hospital
The shots struck the man, who was transported to a local hospital, but he died from his injuries, while no injuries were reported among security personnel during the incident.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation identified the man as “Jack Hinson II,” aged 42, stating that investigations are still ongoing to determine the complete sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
Police had reported that the man came from outside the state of Tennessee, without disclosing further details about his residence or the reason for his presence in the courthouse.
Why did he enter the courthouse armed?
Authorities are still trying to determine the motive behind Hinson’s entry into the courthouse while carrying a gun and a knife, as investigations have not yet revealed whether he was targeting a specific person or had a case or appointment inside the building.
Security teams searched his vehicle, which was parked near the courthouse, but police stated that they found nothing inside that posed an additional threat.
Increased security and library closure
Following the shooting, there was a heavy security presence around the courthouse, with police officers and K-9 units seen conducting searches in the vicinity of the building.
The nearby public library was also closed as a precaution, and employees from nearby buildings were seen exiting into the streets as security measures continued.
The courthouse building houses the local U.S. Attorney’s office, as well as offices for Tennessee’s U.S. Senators, which led to heightened security measures following the incident.
Unprecedented incident in the building
U.S. Attorney’s Office First Assistant Rob McGuire stated that the courthouse had previously experienced security incidents involving individuals behaving inappropriately, necessitating their removal from the building, but it had never witnessed an incident as serious as Thursday’s.
He added that the incident caused concern among those present in the courthouse, prompting several employees to contact their families to reassure them after the building was secured.
Investigation ongoing
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case at the request of the district attorney for the 20th judicial district and the U.S. Marshals Service.
The bureau confirmed that its investigators are working to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and establish the sequence of events, with the results of the investigation to be referred to the district attorney for review and decision regarding the circumstances of the use of force by the security officer.
