In a discovery that raises questions about the history of an official site in North Dakota, seven coffins containing human remains were found, along with an unidentified empty wooden box, in the yard of the state governor’s residence, about five months after the first remains were discovered during construction work at the site.
Initial analyses showed that the remains belong to seven individuals, including two women, two men, two teenagers, and a small child, according to the state’s Office of Management and Budget as reported to People magazine.
Preliminary discovery led to unknown graves
The story began on May 19, when contractors found human remains while working in the yard. Work in the surrounding area was immediately halted, and authorities were notified, who enlisted archaeologists from the state historical society to search for any additional remains using ground-penetrating radar technology.
Brandon Solberg, the facilities manager at the office, stated that the archaeologists completed their fieldwork on September 14 after identifying more than 80 sites worthy of examination, with initial indications suggesting the possibility of ten graves in the work area.
The archaeological investigation is still ongoing, as specialists are working to examine and document the discovered remains and artifacts, with the final analysis expected to be completed in early 2027. Meanwhile, a local funeral home has been contracted to reinter the remains in a cemetery in the area next spring.
A cemetery dating back to the 19th century
The significance of the discovery lies in the site where the remains were found; Kara Haff, a spokesperson for the state historical society, explained to the Bismarck Tribune that the area was part of the “Bismarck Cemetery,” which was used from the mid-1870s to the late 1870s.
She added that efforts were made in the 1880s to relocate graves from the old cemetery to the “Saint Mary’s” and “Fairview” cemeteries. Reports from that time indicated that all graves were moved except for two, but the new discovery revealed that other remains had remained at the site, contrary to previous beliefs.
For his part, a spokesperson for North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Kelly Armstrong, confirmed to the North Dakota Monitor that the governor places great importance on ensuring that the human remains are treated with the care and respect they deserve.
