The excitement was not only present on the pitch during the match between Dukra and its guest Al-Jazeera in the fifth round of the Jordanian Pro League, but it extended beyond the final whistle with a humorous incident that sparked widespread debate.
The match, which ended with a significant victory for Al-Jazeera 5-1, began with an early goal for the home team by Omar Al-Khatib in the seventh minute, before the guests rallied, led by their veteran striker Yassin Al-Bakhit, who turned the tables with a hat-trick that led his team to a crushing victory.
After the referee blew the final whistle, Al-Bakhit – as is customary in football fields around the world – approached the match referee or observer to keep the match ball as a traditional souvenir for the hat-trick scorer, a written but widely respected football custom in sports circles.
However, the surprise came with a firm refusal from one of the match officials to hand the ball to the player, in a humorous situation that puzzled those present and viewers following the match on screens.
Although keeping the ball after scoring a hat-trick is not based on any legal clause or explicit text in the regulations of either the international or Jordanian federations, and remains merely a recognized tradition, the official’s strictness and insistence on the ball opened the door to questions about the commitment to sports customs and the appreciation of individual achievements, especially after the significant effort the player made to lead his team to a wide victory away from home.
