مشعر عرفات مدينة عدد سكانها صفر، خلال يوم واحد يسكنها أكثر من 2.5 مليون نسمة من أكثر 100 جنسية حول العالم يقطنون بها لأقل من 12 ساعة فقط.
ويتحوّل مشعر عرفات خلال أيام معدودة من سهل محاط بتقوّسات جبلية، خالٍ من السكان، إلى مدينة تضج بالحياة، تحتضن ملايين الحجاج و العاملين من كافة القطاعات والمؤسسات.
ويحيط بمشعر عرفات جبال عدة، إضافة إلى وادي عرنة، وفيه يقع جبل عرفات المسمى بجبل الرحمة، ومسجد نمرة الذي تقام فيه خطبة عرفة، ويُصلى فيه الظهر والعصر يوم عرفة جمعًا وقصرًا بأذان واحد، وإقامتين للصلاة.
وعلى الرغم من الجهود الكبيرة في مشعر عرفة لتهيئته لاستقبال الحجاج إلا أن الساعات التي يقضيها ضيوف الرحمن بالمشعر لا تتجاوز 12 ساعة لتعود مرة أخرى مدينة بلا سكان، فهو أحد المشاعر المقدسة التي يقصدها الحجاج، ويُطلق على نهار وقفته يوم الحج الأعظم، وهو وجهة الحجاج بين فجر ومغرب اليوم التاسع من شهر ذي الحجة، وهو المشعر الوحيد الذي يقع خارج حد الحرم.
ويتشكّل مشعر عرفات جغرافيًا من سهل محاط بتقوّسات جبلية، يحده وادي عرنة من أطراف عدة، وعلى بعد 6 كم من أقرب المشاعر إليه، مشعر مزدلفة، فيما يبعد عن مشعر منى 10 كم.
Arafat is a city with a population of zero. During a single day, it is inhabited by more than 2.5 million people from over 100 nationalities around the world, who stay for less than 12 hours only.
Within just a few days, Arafat transforms from a plain surrounded by mountainous curves, devoid of residents, into a bustling city that embraces millions of pilgrims and workers from various sectors and institutions.
Arafat is surrounded by several mountains, in addition to the Arna Valley, where Mount Arafat, known as the Mountain of Mercy, is located, along with the Nimra Mosque where the Arafat sermon is delivered. The noon and afternoon prayers are combined and shortened with one call to prayer and two prayer establishments on the Day of Arafat.
Despite the significant efforts at Arafat to prepare it for receiving pilgrims, the hours that the guests of الرحمن spend at the site do not exceed 12 hours before it returns to being a city without residents. It is one of the sacred sites that pilgrims visit, and the day of their standing is referred to as the Day of the Greatest Pilgrimage. It is the destination for pilgrims between dawn and sunset on the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and it is the only site located outside the limits of the sanctuary.
Arafat geographically consists of a plain surrounded by mountainous curves, bordered by the Arna Valley from several sides, and is located 6 km from the nearest site to it, Muzdalifah, while it is 10 km away from Mina.
