Real Madrid has received positive indications regarding the possibility of its coach José Mourinho utilizing Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the upcoming clásico against Barcelona, after his health condition improved following an influenza infection, despite the club announcing his exclusion from the match earlier on Sunday.
According to what was reported by “The Athletic,” Courtois (34 years old) hopes to join the anticipated match, with the possibility of traveling with the team’s delegation and making himself available to the coaching staff, provided he is allowed to do so based on the development of his health condition.
Real Madrid had announced on Sunday morning that their first-choice goalkeeper would miss the match, before the possibility of a change in the situation emerged, a development that could give the team an important boost in one of the season’s most significant encounters.
Real Madrid is heavily relying on the Belgian goalkeeper, who has been a starter in all of the team’s matches this season, while Ukrainian Andriy Lunin represents the alternative option in case Courtois cannot participate. Lunin has previously played 43 matches in La Liga over the past five seasons in the absence of the first-choice goalkeeper.
The club’s actions reflect its caution regarding Courtois’s readiness, as they included Ukrainian goalkeeper Ilya Voloshin in the delegation, who has never participated in an official match with the first team, alongside Sergio Mistry, in anticipation of any developments related to the goalkeeper position.
Courtois is in his ninth season with Real Madrid, having transferred from Chelsea in the summer of 2018, and he has succeeded in establishing himself as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, having kept a clean sheet in 98 matches in La Liga and contributed to the team winning 12 titles, including three La Liga titles and two Champions League titles.
The Belgian goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the current season, amid expectations of an extension for an additional year until 2028.
The potential return of Courtois comes at a critical time for Real Madrid, which enters the clásico trailing Barcelona, the league leaders, by six points, following an improvement in its results with victories over Sevilla and Leipzig.
On the other hand, the team will miss the services of Brazilian Vinícius Júnior, who continues to serve a domestic suspension for four matches, increasing the importance of the readiness of key players before the anticipated match.
