Romania announced on Saturday the downing of two drones that violated its airspace over the Black Sea, in a development that comes amid rising drone attacks on ships in the region against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.
Romanian Defense Minister Radu Mircea stated in a post on Facebook that pilots in the Romanian army shot down the drones after they illegally entered the country’s airspace, without specifying their types.
Mircea explained that the first drone entered Romanian airspace at 17:59 local time and was shot down in less than two minutes, about 25 kilometers southeast of the coastal city of Sulina overlooking the Black Sea.
He added that the second drone was detected in the same area and was shot down at 18:05 local time, about 20 kilometers east of Sulina, five minutes after entering Romanian airspace.
For its part, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that F-16 fighter jets from the Romanian Air Force carried out the downing operation after radar systems detected a group of aerial targets about 120 kilometers east of Serpents Island, moving southwest.
NATO had previously downed four drones in Romanian airspace this year, amid the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the increasing security risks associated with aerial and military activities in the Black Sea region.
