Alexey Moskalyov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, clarified that consuming milk or sugar during fasting periods between meals breaks the fast due to their caloric content, while tea can be consumed without additives during this time.
He noted that the fasting period between meals, during which only water is allowed in its strictest form, gives the body a chance to stop receiving calories continuously, emphasizing that the metabolism is not prepared for food intake throughout the day, from early morning until late at night, due to potential health issues that may arise.
Moskalyov explained that the lack of nutrients during fasting periods drives the metabolism to shift towards a restorative state, pointing out that clinical trials have shown that abstaining from food during a daytime period ranging from 8 to 10 hours contributes to improving metabolic indicators.
He added that organizing meal times, along with sleep and physical activity, is supported by reliable scientific evidence in reducing the risks of early death.
He confirmed that adding a spoonful of sugar or milk or cream to drinks, or consuming juices and sweetened beverages, provides the body with nutrients that end the fasting period from a metabolic perspective, but he stressed that regular fasting for sufficient periods is more important for health than being preoccupied with calculating small amounts of calories, such as a single drop of milk.
Regarding calorie-free sweeteners and additives, he indicated that the available scientific evidence regarding their impact on metabolism is still limited, making it difficult to determine their suitability during fasting periods, warning that regular use of most sweeteners may be associated with harmful health effects.
On the timing of meals, Moskalyov clarified that the common rule advising against eating after 6 PM is not based on a specific scientific foundation, pointing out that what is more important is the regularity of the daily rhythm, the duration of the eating period, and its relationship with sleep times.
He gave an example of eating between 10 AM and 8 PM, a period that extends for ten hours and can fit various daily life schedules.
He noted that scientific data generally indicates that eating earlier in the day may be better from a physiological standpoint, as insulin sensitivity and other metabolic processes are linked to the body’s biological clock.
He explained that there is no scientific evidence that specifies the necessity of having the last meal three hours before sleeping, indicating that having dinner at 8 PM may be suitable for those who sleep between 11 PM and midnight.
Moskalyov concluded his advice by emphasizing the importance of adhering to a regular daily routine, avoiding frequent late-night snacks, and maintaining a reasonable eating period, with a preference for not having the main meal in the evening whenever possible.
