U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington agrees with London’s assessment regarding the likelihood of Iran’s involvement in the security incident near the British Fairford Air Base, an accusation that Tehran denies and claims lacks evidence.
Rubio told reporters, “Britain has stated that the Iranians are behind the attack on the airbase. Clearly, we have no reason to disagree with this assessment. In fact, we agree with it.”
This position from Washington comes after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced that there are strong indications of Iran’s involvement in the incident that occurred near the Royal Air Force base in Fairford, pointing out that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is likely behind it. London has announced its intention to take additional measures against Tehran amid rising concerns about alleged Iranian activities beyond its borders.
The issue began on September 27, when British police announced a major security incident near Fairford Air Base, arresting five British men on suspicion of committing terrorism and explosives-related offenses. They were later released on bail while investigations continued.
On October 1, counter-terrorism police arrested a man holding both British and Iranian citizenship on suspicion of preparing for a terrorist act, before he was also released on bail. Authorities have not announced any criminal charges against the suspects in the published reports about the case so far.
British police reported that they did not find explosive devices inside the vehicles that were inspected near the base, but they did seize a quantity of gasoline. They also confirmed that the investigation is looking into multiple possibilities, including the potential involvement of a foreign entity, without publicly announcing decisive evidence proving Tehran’s responsibility for the incident.
In contrast, Iran denied any connection to the incident. Its embassy in London described the speculation regarding Tehran’s involvement as “baseless and malicious,” while the Iranian Foreign Ministry rejected the British accusations, considering them aimed at tarnishing the country’s image. Tehran also summoned the British ambassador to protest against linking Iran to the incident.
The case gains additional significance due to the military role of Fairford Air Base, located in southwest England, which is used by the U.S. Air Force to operate strategic bombers and conduct military missions, as the base has been used in U.S. operations against Iran, placing the incident within the broader context of the confrontation between Tehran and Washington and their allies.
Rubio’s endorsement of the British assessment comes at a time when Iran and Western countries are exchanging accusations regarding security and military activities, while the case raises questions about the extent of any direct connection between the suspects and Iranian authorities.
